Nodes are the back bone of Bitcoin

Nodes hold every Bitcoin transaction ever. There are 10,000 of  nodes replicated all over the world. Nodes also process Lightning transactions. Lightning is a development by Lightning Labs

Running your own node

2 Levels of running a node

1 Basic node - Hold and checks every transaction ever requires little input once set up.

2 Basic node + Lightning - All the above + Lightning wallet / channels. In depth knowledge and maintenance required.

AT this point I'll defer to BTC Sessions far superior knowledge and series of videos >

Private Lightning wallet connected to your own Bitcoin node

What you need -
A bitcoin full node : eg mynodebtc or Casa hodl.
A software lightning wallet. E.G. Zap wallet or Blue wallet.
Most nodes now have a built in Lightning wallet or you can use your App which can be linked to either your own personal (full privacy) node or the wallets generally provide you with a their own node connection (not so private).

Pros
  • Full privacy
Cons
  • Difficult to set up
  • you have to run your own node
